Eat Stay Play Alberta supports and highlights province’s tourism and hospitality industry - Calgary Herald

Article content

OK Albertans, it’s been a really tough, vacation-less, year or so. Thankfully, we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

It’s time to get out and safely enjoy our mountains, rivers, plains, museums, parks, cafes, hiking trails, golf courses … and so much more. So let us Eat Stay Play Alberta.

Postmedia, publisher of the Calgary Herald and Sun and the Edmonton Journal and Sun, plus numerous Alberta community newspapers, is joining with Alberta’s travel, hospitality and tourism industries to highlight our homegrown recreation and entertainment options — including hundreds of special deals on places to visit throughout the province.

Jared Holland, Postmedia Calgary media sales manager, says the idea for the Eat Stay Play Alberta program — which lives online on the Herald and Journal websites — came with the recognition of the COVID-19 pandemic’s continued effect on the province’s tourism industry. That industry has seen, overall, a more than 50 per cent decline in revenue.

“We won’t be seeing international travellers or even those from other provinces, so these industries will be dependent on Albertans visiting the amazing things this province has to offer.”

As Holland puts it, the special content channel will “tell the story of Alberta. You’ll learn about places in your own city you never knew about.

“And, in the past, most of us have just driven by those small towns or the viewpoints by the waterfalls, the mountains; this year we’ll tell you why you want to stop.”

The website channel will run all year long with regularly updated content focusing on opportunities throughout Alberta.

There will be a mix of editorial and sponsored content on the platform, offering not only trip ideas, but also profiles of tourism and hospitality services and special deals and packages from site advertisers.

The first week alone launched with 144 special deals and Holland expects that number to grow weekly. Special deals can be uploaded here.

Advertisers have access to multiple packages (online and print) and will receive exposure to Postmedia’s digital audience (the Herald and Journal websites attract a combined 4.1 million unique visitors per month). Free listings with deals will also appear in print in both newspapers.

For Albertans hungry to get off the couch and explore the province and for local businesses fighting to survive the pandemic, it truly is time to Eat Stay Play Alberta.
