Nelson Da Paz and Cindy Aleixo said COVID-19 gave them an opportunity to sit back and evaluate their lives.
It also gave them a push to start something they have always dreamed of doing — opening a Portuguese “churrasqueira” — a grilled chicken takeout restaurant.
The Kleinburg couple set their sights on Bolton, where they do all their shopping.
“We love the community, so it was a perfect fit,” said Da Paz.
Flame House Grill, a family-run business, opened in the same plaza as the Bar Burrito and Pizza Hut on Hwy 50 in Bolton in early April.
Da Paz said the eatery serves “world famous Portuguese grilled chicken” along with other Portuguese dishes such as piri piri potatoes, shrimp patties and popular custard tarts.
Although they have never owned a restaurant before, Da Paz said they love cooking.
The current pandemic may have sparked Da Paz and Aleixo to start the restaurant but the restrictions also caused them to open later than planned — they had hoped to open their doors in March.
But the couple are undeterred by the setbacks and are looking forward to bringing something different to Caledon’s dining scene.
“We are excited to bring this to the community,” Da Paz said.
