In a press release, the organization said it lost its warehouse full of local food that was to be delivered the next day.

It was only the third week of deliveries for the not-for-profit.

Eat Local Huron manager Courtney Lang was at the Eat Local Huron warehouse in Westfield when she noticed smoke coming from the ceiling. She called 911 and alerted staff at the Hensall Co-op next door.

According to the press release, firefighters arrived to find an electrical fire had burned into the attic and spread across the building.

“Smoke billowed from the warehouse for hours as firefighters tore out the ceiling and hosed down the rafters,” the press release stated.

No one was injured, but the food and much of the equipment was ruined with smoke and water damage.

Eat Local Huron is figuring out its next steps. The group said insurance will likely cover the loss of the food and the equipment, but not the renovations that were done, leaving it without a warehouse for now.

The Blyth Festival has offered Eat Local Huron a temporary home at Memorial Hall while the group looks for a permanent site.

Eat Local Huron said it will stay in contact with supporters and producers through EatLocalHuron.ca and @eatlocalhuron on social media.

As well, a crowdfunding campaign has started at GoFundMe. Search for Help Eat Local Huron Recover from Fire.

The group thanked its customers, producers and all who have supported them since the fire and since the project’s launch.
