To eat or not to eat…that is the question - Wetaskiwin Times Advertiser

Article content

The other frosty cold day, I went into this restaurant to grab a breakfast and a hot cup of coffee…at least I thought I would….until I was harassed by the person seating people.

I am a resident of Wetaskiwin for 30-plus years, I live, shop and eat here, because I live here, and have been doing so for 30-plus years.

It would be so nice for once to go into a restaurant or be greeted kindly by a server or a cashier in one of the stores. None of the above has happened to me in the past two to three weeks. Granted it could be the stress of the holiday season, and people are not as friendly, but that is hardly an excuse to be rude.

If you are in the service industry, you are nothing without your customers. How difficult is it to smile and chit chat to everyone, and not just a select few? I have witnessed this too recently. Or why should a cashier not believe me and rifle through my stuff and demand my receipt? This has also happened to me in one of the stores in this community last week.

It gets very, very tiring and monotonous having to continually “fight” to be treated equally. In fact, I am right sick of it.

Attempting to go and eat at this restaurant, they still demanded to see my identification. I am double-vaxxed and that is the only requirement in all of Alberta to get into a restaurant. I have gone to eat in Edmonton, Leduc and surrounding areas, and I have not been asked for my identification. All they have asked for was my QR code, which is on my phone. Yet I was treated with such disgust by this gal saying to me verbatim, “ok I can let you in this time, but next time, you have to bring your I.D.” Like huh? I was also asked by the owner once prior to provide my identification, even though I have been eating in her restaurant for the past 30 years!!! Until they change their demands and stop making a scene, I will no longer be going to eat there.

The next restaurant I went to I was greeted with a smile, and such welcoming flair, that all they needed was my online QR code for proof of vaccination, no demands of identification.

Why is one thing good for one and not the other? I invite all “Wetaskiwin-ites” to ask yourselves this question.

Give that some food for thought!
